AUSTINTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT SAVES TAX
DOLLARS AND HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT

The Austintown Local School District has been designated as a three
star Ohio Green Fleet by Clean Fuels Ohio’s statewide program.
The Ohio Green Fleets program recognizes fleets for improvements in environmental performance and efficiency. Through an Ohio EPA
grant, the district has acquired 14 new buses fueled by propane.
Representatives from Clean Fuels Ohio, Cardinal Bus/Roush Engines,
and Youngstown Propane will be on hand.

Fleets are evaluated based on policies they have implemented to reduce vehicle emissions and reliance on petroleum fuels.
Austintown Local Schools has worked in several key areas to improve
the performance of its bus fleet.  First, Austintown has received
funding from the Ohio EPA to retrofit existing diesel buses with
Diesel Oxidation Catalysts which reduce pollutants harmful to human
healthand the environment.  Austintown has also worked to
install preheaters
on all buses to provide heat tothe vehicles while eliminatingunnecessary idling—further reducing vehicle emissions, fueluse, and operating costs.

Most recently, the District has received additional Ohio EPA grant
funding to replace 14 diesel-powered buses, with cleaner, more cost
effective propane autogas powered units.By implementing these
strategies, Austintown Local Schools are making tremendous strides
to improve their economic and environmental performance. In fact, the
district can expect annually reduce 38% (1.7572 tons) of Nitrogen
Oxide emissions (smog), 36.4% (0.0884 tons) of particulate matter
emissions (black soot in exhaust), 7.3% (0.0351 tons) of hydrocarbon emissions,6.1% (31.83 tons) of carbon dioxide emissions (greenhouse gas), as wellas annually displace approximately 15,590
gallons of diesel with cleaner, domestic, and more cost effective
propane autogas. Combined, these solutions will offer significant health
and air quality benefits for community residents and student riders—
and make the district’s operations more cost effective
.
