Austintown Elementary Counselor Kelley Mills has received some major awards in the past year, for her work with students and their families. Now she's being recognized as one of the best nationally. On January 4, 2017, Kelley Mills is on her way to the White house!

January 4th-6th, Mills will visit the nation’s capital as the 2017 Counselor of the Year State Representative. She is one of 50 to be honored in the nation. Michelle Obama will host the group in a ceremony at the White House and Kelley will be formally recognized at a black-tie gala at the historic Union Station. The trip also includes an exclusive tour of the White House.

During her visit, Kelley will break from the group to attend a special meeting with Don Yu who runs the "Better Make Room" campaign to discuss this initiative that encourages kids to go to college and how to spread the message to elementary students.

“Kelley brings so many programs and opportunities to benefit our students at AES, and we are so proud to have her represent the Austintown Local Schools in Washington D.C.,” says Vincent Colaluca, Austintown Superintendent.

The School Counselor of the Year program honors the professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates for the nation’s students, helping them achieve success in school and in life. Mills was awarded the overall Ohio School Counselor of the Year for 2016 as well as the Elementary Counselor of the Year. She was nominated by fellow counselor, Penny Callahan, who will be accompanying Mills during her visit to D.C.

Nominations for the School Counselor of the Year awards program were submitted by the state school counselor associations. State representatives were selected based on several criteria, including: school counseling innovations, effective school counseling programs, leadership and advocacy skills and contributions to student advancement.
